Well TECHNICALLY it originally premiered March 2, 1933 in NYC but it was released nationwide on April 7th, 1933 but… IT’S STILL friggin awesome. And at its core, it’s basically Peter Jackson’s favorite flick turned cinematic DNA. This masterpiece of cinema didn’t just age well–it practically invented the rules for giant monster movies, special effects, and blockbuster spectacle before those were even real categories.
By today’s standards it holds NO candles but in the grand scheme of CINEMA HISTORY it still hits with that raw, larger-than-life energy that makes you forget you’re watching stop-motion and just buy into the madness. Honestly, for something pushing 100 years old, it has no business going this hard–but here we are
