Update! ….Zak Penn Confirms He’s Working on the Sequel
Remember when Ready Player One came out and it was an awesome mash-up on EVERYTHING nerdy and sci-fi and pop culture? Remember when He-man and Batman and MASTER CHIEF participated in a final battle with Chucky and the Iron Giant and the Grandaddy Gundam? Well I sure do…….and I (along with the internet) immediately started wondering when we were getting a sequel? ……Well, it’s been a while now (eight years later) and the answer appears to be: maybe, finally, possibly, ……don’t hold your breath though. Frustrating eh?
Last month, the internet has once again started buzzing about Ready Player Two after a new update from screenwriter Zak Penn (applause). And unlike some random Facebook post claiming a movie is already filming, this time there is an actual reason for the renewed excitement. Penn confirmed in August 2026 that he is working on the screenplay for Ready Player Two. That’s legitimate news, but there’s an important distinction between “the screenplay is being worked on” and “Warner Bros. has officially greenlit the movie.”
So before everybody starts making fake movie posters and predicting a 2028 release date, let’s figure out what is actually happening, shall we?
First Things First: Yes, Ready Player Two Is a Real Book
ICYMI: Ready Player Two isn’t some Hollywood title invented after the first movie made a shitload of money, it’s legit <—- click here for the wiki (which TBH I just learned about researching for this article).
Ernest Cline published the sequel novel in 2020, and the story itself centers around Wade Watts after the events of Ready Player One and gaining control of the OASIS. The story picks up only days after Wade wins control and discovers another technological advancement hidden inside James Halliday’s creations. I don’t want to spoil anything so if you wanna know more click the wiki leak above. I will try to talk about it in vague terms though because it sounds friggin’ awesome NGL. BASICALLY though….Giving humanity one incredibly addictive virtual reality universe wasn’t enough, the discovery introduces an even more advanced version of the OASIS.
This ‘New technology’ creates another hunt involving Halliday’s final secrets, a new enemy, and another threat to the future of humanity. Imagine it though, Wade wins the world’s biggest video-game Easter egg hunt and immediately gets handed another one…. Only this time the stakes are raised (which is a total sequel trope let’s be honest) because apparently this kid isn’t allowed to have a quiet weekend after running the biggest gauntlet in video game history.
So What the Is Happening With the Movie? (Yeah I thought there was an update)
About that. Here’s where things get interesting. Behind closed doors The ‘Ready Player Two’ movie has been discussed for years, dating back to shortly after the book’s release. Ernest Cline himself confirmed in 2020 that conversations had begun with Warner Bros. about adapting the sequel, although the project was still extremely early in development, and this was also before all the WB mergers and the mergers on top of those Mergers.
For years, however, there wasn’t much concrete movement publicly we were in a state of limbo. I had given up prospects on even seeing a sequel until AUGUST came this year and now one of two things is happening: The ball is finally rolling OR we are all just getting set up for disappointment again, I’m a silver linings guy though so I choose the first scenerio.
IT’s like THE BATMAN PART 2 all over again, tons of buzz but no perceiveable momentum, at least we got Zak Penn confirming that he is currently working on the screenplay so it’s a start. In case you didn’t know, Zak Penn co-wrote the original Ready Player One screenplay with Cline, so this isn’t some completely new writer being brought in to take a swing at the franchise either. I think we are in good hands cuz the first movie was EPIC (anything that can use THE SHINING in its story where it’s not incredibly contrived automatically wins my heart)
Let’s us keep persepctive though, this is just draft one of the screen play……There’s a giant difference between having a writer working on a screenplay and having an actual movie entering production. Priduction limbo is absolutely a thing. And as of right now, there is no publicly announced release date for the sequel.
There is also no officially announced director or confirmed returning cast. Those details and contracts only come when there is a solid foundation to build off of, so we got some more hurdles ahead of us. So if you’ve seen somebody online declaring that “Ready Player Two is officially coming in 2028”, pump the brakes before you start buying your OASIS goggles.
What About Steven Spielberg?

This is another important piece of the puzzle, actually its a HUGE piece. I’d attribute alot of the films success to the visual style and production tenacity of SPIELBERG HIMSELF. This man moves mountains when he is dug into a project, him and James Cameron are incredibly persistent filmmakers so when they zero in, S*** gets done.
At leasst there’s hope of his return, Spielberg has previously indicated that if Ready Player Two moves forward he would be interested in returning as a producer rather than directing it himself. On the surface that sounds sus but just as an example….. George Lucas did the same thing with the OG star Wars trilogy. You can still essentially be a director as a producer without a lot of the annoying minutia that comes along with actually directing (picture all those A-holes who meddled in the DCEU, the Wb execs etc, except with somebody who is actually qualified or passionate.)
What Would Ready Player Two Actually Be About?
Again, as mentioned above vasguely, If the movie follows the basic story of Cline’s novel, the sequel would take place shortly after Wade and the other High Five members gain control of the OASIS. Wade discovers a technological advancement hidden within Halliday’s creations that could make the OASIS dramatically more powerful and immersive. But Naturally, that technology comes with yet another mystery and a downside (cue dramatic music). So yet again, there’s gotta another Easter egg hunt. And naturally….. someone else really, really wants the prize.
The sequel introduces a new threat that takes the stakes beyond simply controlling the OASIS. This time, the fate of humanity itself becomes part of the equation. The book also expands the pop-culture rabbit hole considerably, continuing the franchise’s obsession with nostalgia while adding new characters, technology, and another enormous virtual adventure. It also adds blasderunners-esque themes about where the line is drawn between humans and artifical intelligence or how humans navigate a synthesis of the two
And Yes, There Are PLENTY of Easter Eggs
If you enjoyed Ready Player One because it was basically a gigantic pop-culture scavenger hunt, Ready Player Two doesn’t exactly abandon that formula. NERDGASMS are set to be in abundance (although I’m sure negotiating that IP nightmare will be a feat of its own). Cline’s sequel continues digging through decades of movies, music, television, video games, and other pieces of geek culture so buckle up in your delorean. The good part is that the sequel isn’t simply trying to repeat the exact same contest from the first story. In a clever piece of plot armor this workaround is explained very simply: The OASIS itself has evolved.
Heck, Wade and his friends have evolved. And the threat they’re facing has evolved with them. Whether all of those elements make it successfully onto the screen is another question entirely. Hollywood has already demonstrated that translating Cline’s first book into a movie required substantial changes, partly because the novel was absolutely loaded with licensed properties and references. Maybe they just need to throw Masahiro Sakurai in the mix cause that mans a legend in getting everybody in the same boat.
The Original Movie Changed Some Pretty Important Things
One thing worth remembering before judging what a Ready Player Two movie might look like is that Ready Player One wasn’t a word-for-word translation of the book. For thosae who havent read the book, Spielberg and the screenwriters made significant changes to the story, including changing the structure of the hunt and altering some of the challenges for both thematic translation as well as production logistics.
The book was built around an enormous collection of specific pop-culture references and challenges that worked extremely well on the page but would have been considerably more complicated to reproduce on screen. The theater of the mind’s eye knows no legal entangelments and therefore is free and unrestrained but the theater of American Capitalism is another beast entirely, The original film was able to cram references to everything from Back to the Future and The Iron Giant to King Kong, The Shining, classic video games, anime, and countless other properties into one giant pop-culture blender. But even then there were huge limitations
Doing that again would require another ridiculous pile of rights clearances. So again…..whose getting Sakurai on board? and ASAP
My 2 Cents
I’m cautiously interested in this one, I’m hopeful and optimistic too. Ready Player One was basically catnip for anyone who grew up drowning in movies, video games, comics, cartoons, and other nerdy pop culture so I’d love nothing more for that to continue. I am also not an idiot, the machine of Hollywood is sometimes werer IPs go to die and productions grind to a halt due to perceived profitability (which is why I’m happy the COYOTE vs. ACME is givng a BIG middle finger to WB who had 0 faith in it). The idea of going back into the OASIS is appealing, but here’s my concern: don’t just make Ready Player One again. Too often sequels are afraid to innovate becasue hollywoodf HATES risk (which is arguably part of its problem with stagnation lately).
TBH We’ve already seen the giant pop-culture Easter egg hunt, We’ve already seen the nostalgia overload. We’ve already watched the hero discover that the key to saving humanity is apparently knowing an unreasonable amount of useless information about the entertainment of the 1980s. You COULD do it all over again and tweak it to keep things fresh but usually what happens is a repeat that falls flat. The OASIS is potentially one of the coolest fictional pieces of technology ever created, and Ready Player Two has an opportunity to explore what happens when something that powerful becomes even more immersive.
That’s where I want the sequel to go…
JUST PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON’T BE AN X-Men Origins: Wolverine where were the plot sucks but you don’t notice at first because “HEY LOOK AT THIS”
