Today I came across a story of heroism, Star Wars and Bravery. Today I learned about Riley Howell and his inspiring and heroic sacrifice made in the face of terrible danger to protect his fellow classmates and do the right thing. The man stepped up and stopped a school shooter and lost in life in the process but after a stranger reached out to LUCASFILM (Riley was an enormous Star Wars fan) the tragic story took a turn into the territory of inspiring and immortalized him in his favorite CANON forever.
Not all Heroes wear capes (or carry lightsabers in our case)
The story goes like this:
On April 30, 2019, tragedy struck the University of North Carolina at Charlotte during a classroom shooting. Chaos erupted when a gunman opened fire inside the Kennedy building. Among the students present was 21-year-old Army ROTC cadet Riley Howell. Witnesses said Riley charged directly toward the shooter without hesitation. His actions disrupted the attack and likely saved many classmates from being killed.
Riley Howell lost his life during the confrontation, but his bravery quickly gained national attention afterward. Authorities confirmed his tackle prevented the shooter from continuing the attack inside the classroom. UNC Charlotte later awarded Riley the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions. It marked the first time the university presented the honor to a civilian. Friends and family described Riley as intelligent, compassionate, and deeply passionate about Star Wars lore.

As the story of Riley spread online, many people highlighted his lifelong love for the Star Wars universe. So out of nowhere a stranger from Florida decided to contact Lucasfilm with Riley’s story and suggest they honor his memory somehow. What did Lucasfilm do? Well…… turns out they responded in a low-key way (with a heartfelt condolence letter to the Howell family). The letter stated they sent out that Riley’s courage and selflessness “brings out the Jedi in all of us.” The studio also decided to memorialize him permanently within official Star Wars canon because of this giving Riley a place among all the heroes of a galaxy far far away.
Fast forward now to….. December 20, 2019 toThe Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary. What did they do? The book officially introduced Jedi Master Ri-Lee Howell to fans. The character served as an ancient Jedi historian and guardian of sacred Force knowledge. Ri-Lee Howell was credited with preserving some of the Jedi Order’s oldest texts and teachings. Lucasfilm even associated him with a yellow lightsaber, symbolizing wisdom, protection, and balance (like my boy PLO KOON). Many fans appreciated how thoughtfully the tribute reflected Riley’s real-world courage and character.
Wholesome Stories like this always get me. In a chaotic and sometimes dark world we have instances like this. Riley Howell reminds people why heroic sacrifice continues resonating far beyond movies and fictional universes, how one person can make a difference and how when the destiny calls there’s usually somebody bhrave who steps up to answer it.
Star Wars has always celebrated courage, hope, and selflessness during impossible situations. Riley embodied those qualities in real life when others needed help most. Lucasfilm could have offered a brief statement and moved on after the tragedy. Instead, they ensured Riley Howell would live forever in a galaxy far, far away.
