it is with a heavy heart that I’m reporting this…… news outlets broke it this morning. I’m at work, but during my lunch break, I got the news that Peter Colin, a.k.a., the voice of Optimus prime, has passed away. Truly heart wrenching. This week we lost some greats, we lost Dolly Parton and then Tim Curry….. now this. RIP sir!
“Peter Cullen, the legendary voice behind Optimus Prime, died Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at his Los Angeles home. He was 85 years old. Cullen’s agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed that he died peacefully surrounded by his family, who described his legacy through compassion, integrity, loyalty, and strength.” -AP
According to google, the news became public sometime Thursday morning (August 27). TMZ published the first report around 7:00 a.m. PDT. Cullen’s representatives subsequently confirmed the news to major outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, The Associated Press, and The Washington Post. Not that it is any of our business, but his cause of death has not been disclosed, I don’t know much about the dude but I’d chaulk it up to complications of aging, not like the dude was shootin’ up or anything.
Beyond the Voice of Optimus Prime
Although Peter Cullen became inseparable from his role as Optimus Prime, you might be surprised to hear that his career extended FAR beyond that. Fun movie fact too: His first performance as Optimus came with the original 1984 Transformers cartoon, followed by the character’s return in the 1986 animated feature film. Mr. Cullen’s (it feels weird to call him that, just sounds so stale. lol) deep, authoritative delivery gave Optimus an unusual combination of power, wisdom, and warmth that helped define the character for generations of fans, your boy DAKK included.
He remained closely associated with Optimus for decades as the Transformers franchise took off like wildfire. FASTFORWARD to the early 2000s and he returned to the role (yet again) for Michael Bay’s 2007 Transformers (reprising the character throughout the future live-action films). His final theatrical performance as Optimus came in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which if we are being honest….wasn’t half bad AT ALL.
Yet limiting Cullen’s legacy to Optimus would overlook a remarkable collection of other performances. He provided the voice of Eeyore across numerous Winnie the Pooh productions, betcha didn’t know that….. Cullen also created the distinctive vocal effects for the Predator in the original 1987 Predator and voiced KARR on Knight Rider, alongside countless additional roles across television, animation, and other media. Some notable roles include: Winston Zeddemore from The Real Ghostbusters, the Monarch from The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones, Venger from Dungeons & Dragons.
My 2 cents:
There are certain voices that become permanently attached to a character, and Peter Cullen’s Optimus Prime is one of the clearest examples. I growing up he WAS my optimus Prime, You could hear a few seconds of that unmistakable baritone and immediately know who was speaking, and that’s not a common trait. That’s an increasingly rare kind of legacy in an entertainment industry constantly willing to recast, reboot, and reinterpret everything. It’s like Mark Hamill with the joker…..
so that’s the article…… sorry for being killing the vibe. It has been a rough week for pop culture. But alas, Peter Cullen may be gone, but Optimus Prime isn’t going anywhere. Every time that voice comes roaring out of the speakers, generations of fans will remember the man who gave the Autobot leader his soul. Rest in peace, Peter Cullen. Till all are one.
